Youth Sports Player Code of Conduct
Purpose
To promote respect, safety, and good sportsmanship for all players, coaches, officials, and spectators. Our goal is to ensure that participation in sports is a positive experience for all. Please remember that participation in activities offered by Norfolk Recreation is a privilege, not a right.
General Expectations (All Sports)
Players are expected to:
- Show respect to coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, and spectators at all times.
- Play by the rules of the sport and league (when applicable) and accept officials’ decisions without argument.
- Use respectful language — no swearing, teasing, taunting, threats, or bullying.
- Avoid physical aggression outside the rules of the game (no fighting, hitting, or unsafe contact).
- Be a good teammate — encourage others, share playing time, and work together.
- Take care of equipment and facilities — use gear appropriately and clean up after yourself.
- Try your best at all practices and games and maintain a positive attitude.
Consequences
- Minor infractions may result in a warning or reduced playing time.
- Serious or repeated violations may result in suspension or removal from the program, at the discretion of the Program/League Coordinator and Recreation Director.
Field Hockey – Additional Expectations
- Keep sticks below shoulder height unless rules allow.
- Never swing a stick in frustration or anger.
- Maintain reasonable control of your stick and ball at all times to ensure safety.
Flag Football – Additional Expectations
- No tackling, tripping, or unnecessary roughness.
- No inappropriate and/or excessive celebration.
- Avoid dangerous contact, especially with the head or neck area.
Player and Parent Acknowledgment of Policy
By registering for a program, clinic, or league offered by Norfolk Recreation, both players and parents/guardians agree to follow this Player Code of Conduct. Failure to adhere to these expectations may result in disciplinary action, including warnings, reduced playing time, suspension, or removal from the registered activity
